The Malka Aboriginal Art Prize was initiated by the late Mr Marvin McKenzie Senior, whose vision was to have an Aboriginal art show which ensured the Aboriginal community would have a space to showcase their work.

‘Malka’ is a word used by several Aboriginal language groups within the Port Augusta region, meaning mark or painting.

In 2025 it will be the 16th year the Aboriginal Art Prize has been held.

Entries in the 2025 Malka Aboriginal Art Prize are eligible for:

  • 2025 Malka Grand Prize Winner - $5,000 plus $2,000 of art supplies
  • Mr Marvin McKenzie Senior Local Artist Award - $2,500 plus $500 of art supplies
  • People’s Choice Award - $2,500 plus $500 of art supplies
  • Elder Award (60 years or over) - $2,500 plus $500 of art supplies
  • Youth/Junior Award (15 years or under) – $1,000 plus $500 of art supplies

Key Dates

  • Completion of online entry – 16th December – 23rd May 2025
  • Delivery of entries to the gallery – 1st May to 23rd May 2025
  • Judging Period 2nd – 3rd June 2025
  • Exhibition of works – 4th June to 11th July 2025
  • Award Presentation – Friday 11th June 3:30pm – 5pm
  • Collection of works (by buyer) 11th 18th July 2025
  • Collection of unsold works (by artist) 11th 18th July 2025

2024 People's Choice Vote

Vote for your favourite piece of art to win the 2025 People's Choice Award.

The winner will receive a prize of $2,500 AUD plus $500 in Art Supplies.

To vote visit the Yarta Purtli Art Gallery desk and fill in the paper ballot with the catalogue number of the artwork you think should win. 

Votes will only be accepted in person at the Yarta Purtli Art Gallery, one vote per person.
